About Scholars at Risk
Scholars at Risk members are universities and colleges in any country pledged to support SAR's work promoting academic freedom and defending threatened scholars and universities. Each member designates an official SAR representative, and is strongly encouraged to form a local SAR committee to oversee the institution's participation in Network activities.
In some regions or countries, SAR works through partner networks, locally managed networks of universities and colleges similarly pledged to promote academic freedom and related values. Universities and colleges in those places are invited to participate in SAR activities by becoming members of the regional or national partner network.
Academic associations and other organizations sharing common interest in academic freedom and related values are invited to join as affiliates.
The Network is governed by a board made up of representatives of member institutions. The board may establish standing or ad hoc committees to undertake various Network-related activities. A local NYU-SAR advisory board provides additional oversight and guidance from within the host campus of the network headquarters.
Faculty, administrators, students, alumni and others inside and outside of higher education communities are invited to become Friends of Scholars at Risk. A Friends of SAR board is being formed to help raise the financial support that is vital to allowing SAR to continue its important work for threatened scholars and universities.
