Why a Speaker Series?
The Scholars at Risk Speaker Series offers an opportunity to educate
campus communities and the public about threats to academic freedom
and attacks on scholars. Join us this season and invite to your
campus one or more diverse, interesting, courageous scholars, each
with a powerful and unique story to share.
How does it work?
Hosting a Scholars at Risk Speaker is an excellent
way to promote academic freedom and get your institution involved
with Network activities. Each event is tailored to fit the schedule
and interests of the host campus. A visit may include a lecture,
panel, workshop, informal seminar or some combination, and may last
from a few hours to one or more days.
In most cases, a scholar assisted by the Scholars
at Risk Network or the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund visits a Network
university or college with a representative of the Network office.
Scholars spend time discussing both their academic work and the
threats they experienced at home. The Network representative discusses
Scholars at Risk's role in defending academic communities worldwide
and the vital role played by the Network's member universities and
colleges. Local hosts may wish to give a reception for the speaker
before or after the event. The Network office staff will help coordinate
these activities and ensure that the event fits your campus needs.
For each event, we ask the host institution
to:
- Schedule venue arrangements (time, location,
and equipment for the event)
- Publicize the event and coordinate visits with
campus and local media
- Provide speakers with lodgings if an overnight
stay is required and transportation to and from the airport or
other events
- Provide an honorarium and pay all travel expenses
for speakers to be shared between the scholar and the Network.
The honorarium is an important means of supplementing the scholar's
income and helping the Network to meet basic operating expenses.
We understand that some institutions can provide more support
than others. Please let us know if cost is a concern, and we will
help you identify possible resources (seeking co-sponsors such
as other departments, centers, or institutions may help to defray
costs).
How do I request information about the scholars?
SAR will provide detailed information
about these scholars, including background information to interested
universities and colleges for selection of a speaker and general
media purposes. Contact Carla Stuart for more
information by email at
or by phone at (212) 998-2179.
